Posted on: September 10th, 2007 tape #4: I Hate To Disco II – The Next Generation

Disco never completely died, it’s just been living underground for the last twenty years. It slowly turned into house music, it infected rock, and somehow it still bubbles along under the surface in new music.

Part two of my series of Disco Mixes for Disco Haters is a collection of recent tunes which captures the way the Disco template has been repurposed, revered, mutated and warped by a new generation of musicians.

The Cassius tune is great shit. This makes me want to be back at the Rainbow with y’all circa 2001.

Love that tune. The vocalist, Leroy Burgess is an absolute legend – he wrote / produced tunes for a huge variety of underground groups in the late 70s and early 80s, and was in league with Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael through much of that period.

Particularly great are Logg’s “I Know You Will”, Fonda Rae’s “Over Like a Fat Rat” and Universal Robot Band’s “Barely Breaking Even”… There are more – check Soul Brother Records’ Leroy Burgess Anthology, as well as his bio on allmusic.com

I love that abe duque tune; an awesome update of the quintessential “conversation on a dance floor” disco tune. He completely destroyed Detroit this year at DEMF. So good. Keep it up.
